Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday criticised BJP’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi for using Kargil war martyr Captain Vikram Batra’s expression “ Yeh dil maange more [this heart wants more]” during an election rally.
Earlier this week, Mr. Modi used the expression while passionately appealing people to vote for the BJP. The AAP has fielded Capt. Batra’s mother from Hamirpur. Later, defending himself, Mr. Modi said he would “rather leave politics than insult the martyrs or their parents.”
Ms. Gandhi was here to address a rally in support of Pratibha Singh, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh’s wife who is the Congress candidate in Mandi. She mocked Mr. Modi and said he had already declared himself the Prime Minister of the country.
“ Inka dil sirf kursi mang raha hai [ His heart is only longing for the PM’s chair].” Describing Mr. Modi as a pracharak , she said he had forgotten that the key to the top post was in the hands of voters. She told those present that they should follow the path of the Congress for more development and prosperity, and should strengthen democracy.
Ms. Gandhi claimed her party had never made false promises and had always worked for the welfare of the poor. Appealing for support, she assured that everyone would be given the right to access free medical treatment if the Congress was voted back to power.
