Congress president Rahul Gandhi, in an open letter to voters of his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi, promised to give momentum to the development works allegedly “blocked” by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

A delegation of his party also approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), demanding more resources for stringent monitoring, special observers, and increased security in Amethi to ensure free and fair polls.

“We have hostile governments in the State and Union governments, who have been stalling all the development works proposed by the Congress president Rahul Gandhi in the constituency,” Congress spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi said after the delegation’s meeting in Amethi.

In Amethi, Congress MP Ahmed Patel said that the permissions for rallies, public meetings, and the party’s advertisements, were delayed. “We do not trust the State or Union government to ensure free and fair polls in Amethi,” Mr. Singhvi said.

‘Like family’

In a letter written to the members of his Amethi pariwar (family), Mr. Gandhi said he drew strength from them to stand firmly, to listen to the woes of people and raise their voice.

“It is my promise to the people of Amethi that as soon as the Congress forms its government at the Centre, the schemes blocked by the BJP will be started. On May 6, vote in large numbers to bring back this member of the family,” the three-time MP from the seat said in the letter.
