Congress president Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination for the Lok Sabha election from Amethi in the presence of his mother Sonia Gandhi, sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and brother-in-law Robert Vadra.

The three-term MP will take on Union Minister and BJP candidate Smriti Irani.

Mr. Gandhi reached the Collectorate to file his papers after a roadshow through the town along with his sister, brother-in-law and their two children in an open truck.

Surging crowds of Congress supporters walked along the truck to the Collectorate.

Ms. Sonia Gandhi was not part of the roadshow.

Mr. Gandhi is also contesting from Wayanad in Kerala. He filed his nomination there on April 4.

Amethi goes to the polls on May 6, fifth phase of the Lok Sabha election, which begins on April 11.
