The Congress on Tuesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “lowering” the dignity of his office and the country by ridiculing the armed forces, using them to make electoral gains and issuing cheap comments.

“The time for Modi ji has come to pack his bags. His policies wreak havoc and statements carry venom,” Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said at a press conference.

“Modi ji has misused the defence forces like never before. He said surgical strikes [during the UPA’s time] were like security personnel playing video games or those were on paper. He is ridiculing the security forces,” he alleged.

“Brigadier (Retd.) Gurmeet Kanwal wrote on Twitter and I quote ‘As commander of the Gurez brigade, I asked for and was given a Special Forces team under operational control for the summer. We certainly weren’t playing video games’. These are people who are not in politics,” Mr. Singhvi said.

The Congress leader said the BJP shifted goal posts whenever it was “confronted with issues like employment, black money and economy”.

He also criticised the Prime Minister for calling former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi “corrupt number one” and argued that a clean chit in the Bofors deal case was given by the Delhi High Court in 2004 and later by the Supreme Court in 2018.

“How appropriate it is to attack dead people, who can’t defend themselves? The Prime Minister is running helter skelter in fear and frustration, from issue to issue and from pillar to post,” he said.

“Modiji is not just lowering the dignity of the Prime Minister’s Office but also lowering the dignity and image of India,” Mr. Singhvi added.

“Generally, a person who has held constitutional positions of Chief Minister and Prime Minister tends to become a statesman. However, in case of Modiji, it is regressive. The time has come for him to go,” the Congress spokesperson alleged.
