Lok Sabha Election 2019

Cong. moves EC on Modi speech

Decide on the complaint within 48 hours, it tells poll panel

The Congress on Monday approached the Election Commission (EC) against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comment on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi describing him a ‘bhrashtachari [corrupt] number one’ at a rally in Uttar Pradesh last week.

Submitting the memorandum to the EC, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the poll panel must decide on the complaint within 48 hours as questions about its credibility were being raised.

PM’s speech cleared

The EC said it has not found any violation of its advisories and the Model Code of Conduct in Mr. Modi’s speech at Chitradurga in Karnataka last month. At a public rally on April 9, Mr. Modi had invoked the Balakot air strike, following which the State Congress alleged a violation.

After examining the issue, the Commission was of the view that it did not attract any violation. In seven speeches of Mr. Modi, the EC ruled no violation.
