Laser medicine is an advanced programme that educates one about the use of lasers in the fields of dermatology and aesthetic medicine. The field of lasers is predicted to grow significantly in the near future and aims at addressing the requirement for highly skilled doctors to work globally at high responsibility levels in this area.

Laser therapies are medical treatments which use focused light. Lasers permit surgeons to work at high levels of precision by focusing on a small area and not damaging the surrounding tissue. Through laser therapy, a person may experience less pain, swelling, or scarring when compared to conventional therapy, though, laser therapy can be expensive and may require multiple sessions.

Hair transplant is the go-to remedy for those who have lost their hair and even for those who want to alter their hairlines or acquire a stunning mane.

Skills required

A successful laser or hair transplant technician/physician requires both talent and skill. They generally work with a team to recover the client’s self-esteem and health. Apart from having great customer service skills, they must have better hand-eye coordination, they should have knowledge of working with computer-based equipments, and excellent interpersonal and verbal skills.

Professionals must have the ability to make decisions and recognise the conditions they can treat, and those which require experts; the willingness to consistently stay updated with the constantly evolving technology and techniques.

Course content

The course empowers both soft skills and with hard skills required to deal with clients in order to survive in this competitive business. The Institute of Aesthetic Medicine (ILAMED) offers a diploma in aesthetic laser therapy (DALM). It is the only university-based programme in aesthetic laser medicine in the world, and it has international extensions, notably with the University of Alabama, the U.S., and the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

For hair transplantation, the institute offers a master’s course in hair transplantation to licensed physicians who are currently practising in different fields and have an interest in hair restoration.

Eligibility and responsibilities

Laser therapist: A candidate may require a high school diploma or its equivalent. Laser therapy coursework includes hands-on training and various subjects such as regulatory laws and safety recommendations, laser skin rejuvenation, laser hair removal, cellulite improvement, laser tattoo removal, laser vein removal and so on.

After the completion of a recognised laser training programme, laser therapists meet all requirements to take a qualifying exam. Once the candidate passes the exam, they qualify for certification from a variety of major certification bodies.

His/her responsibilities include:

  • Performing skin analysis and evaluation to decide laser treatments.
  • Handling laser procedures including treatments of pigmented lesions and thread veins, facial or skin rejuvenation, hair removal, chemical resurfacing, wrinkle reduction, active acne and so on.
  • Developing plans for the treatment of patients with on-going follow-ups.
  • Advising and coordinating with patients on all aspects of procedures and answering their queries in a very professional and friendly manner.

Hair transplant professional: An excellent hair transplant requires a great artistic mind and utmost cosmetic and plastic surgery knowledge to offer the best results. To perform the hair transplant surgery, it is compulsory that the professional must be a plastic and cosmetic medical specialist.

His/her responsibilities include:

  • In-depth knowledge and skill of FUE and FUT method of hair transplantation.
  • Advise appropriate treatment to patients.
  • Correct and complete document of patient’s files and records.

Remuneration

As a laser therapist, one can earn high salaries which can range from ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 in the beginning, and on a few years, relevant skills and expertise, competent individuals can earn up to ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh per month. There is also a bright opportunity of starting your own set-up. As an expert in hair transplantation, one can earn high salaries which can range from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakhs per month in the beginning and eventually can earn up to ₹3-₹5 lakhs per month.
