Though our lives are getting more and more digital, it may not be time yet to sound the death knell for printed in-house magazines. There are some that still do well — in fact, very well.

Federal Reach, the quarterly in-house magazine of Federal Bank, is around 10 years old and its popularity among its target group has not waned. Every quarter, 12,500 copies of the magazine are printed for the company’s workforce spread across India. Even a short delay in the release of the magazine triggers a flurry of calls to the company’s headquarters in Aluva.

Being a part of this magazine’s editorial team is a matter of prestige to many employees Every year, there is a waiting-list of people who want to join the team.

“This year, we received 88 applications for the role of a ‘sub-editor’. To ensure many employees get to function in an editorial capacity, we choose a new team every year,” says N. Rajanarayanan, deputy vice-president (Marketing and Investor Relations). The team consists of 10 members. Zonal coordinators drawn from its branches coordinate with the editorial team to get content for the 50 to 60 pages of the magazine.

For 26 years, TVS Motor Company’s quarterly newsletter — TQC News (Total Quality Control) — is being published in English, Tamil and Kannada with tailor-made content being created for the employees at its factories in Mysore and Hosur.

Around 2,000 copies of the newsletter are printed and distributed to both executives and shopfloor employees. The newsletter is also shared on the company’s intranet. In an effort to go paperless, RPG Group is working towards reducing the number of printed copies of its quarterly newsletter. From 2,500 copies, it recently reduced the number to 2,000.
