Ace Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu created history on Sunday by bagging India’s first gold at the World Championships. She is now ranked fifth in the world and has improved the rate at which she reaches at least the semifinals of tournaments.
Career path
The graph shows the year-end world ranking progression (last ranking in December of each year, except 2019) of the current top five women’s singles players.
Sindhu’s career-best was rank 3 in the year end of 2017. Her best rank ever has been 2. Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi is currently world no. 1. China’s Chen Yu Fei has the steepest upward trajectory.
Upping her game
Sindhu has managed to reach at least the semifinals in half the tournaments she has played in 2019. This is her best conversion rate (Considered here as the % of tournaments in which she reached at least the semifinals of major BWF events, the Olympics 2016, and CWG) in the last six years.
Asian supremacy
Along with Sindhu, Indians feature among the top 100 shuttlers in both the men’s and women’s singles categories, which is dominated by Asians. China has the highest number.
