The Devil had issued an order: his trainees had to earn their stripes. The Angel’s trainees were leading. They had saved plenty of the Devil’s trainees’ targets. It was the moral duty of the Devil’s 999 trainees to cause maximum harm to humans. For the Angel’s 1111 trainees, it was a matter of life and death to save as many people as possible from the Devil’s brigade. Both sides were at extreme cross-purposes and always at loggerheads. Competition between them was fierce. The Adorable Angels were constantly pitted against the Devious Devils. The Adorable Angels mission was to ‘Rescue and Save’. While the Devious Devils was to ‘Trouble and Torment’.

Handsome Devon, the most successful Devil’s trainee, was perpetually pitted against pretty Angel Annabell. They loathed each other. Currently, their record was equal. Annabell had saved 110 people tormented by Devon. Devon had troubled 110 people guarded by Annabell.

The Devils and the Angels hovered over schools and playgrounds. Both groups were invisible. If it was necessary to reveal their presence, then they appeared as different identities, or as strangers. The Devils and Angels were always visible to each other in their original forms, which was similar to humans, but with a small difference. Large silver wings fanned out from their shoulders. An incandescent halo, invisible to the human eye, surrounded their heads. Shiny black horns emerged from the top of the Devils’ heads. A long tail poked out from their bottoms.

Hidden away

If either the Angels or Devils assumed different forms: that of animals or objects, then their identity was hidden from each other. The people on Earth were not aware of their presence in any form, unless the Angels and Devils willingly appeared before them. The Devil’s trainees: both girls and boys wore silver-black body suits, while the Angel’s trainees wore silver-white suits. Black and white. A contrast and a clash.

Devon loved haunting the Good Heart Academy. Students of this co-educational institute were extremely susceptible to his tricks. The teachers were short-tempered and irritable and the principal a strict disciplinarian; this made it easy for Devon to get the students into trouble and make them suffer punishments and detentions. And Devon loved getting the students into trouble. He disliked silly tricks: like tying the shoelaces of students to make them fall or shoving students into puddles.

One of his favourite tricks was using illusion on the students’ note-books. Students would see their names on the notebooks they pulled out from their school bags and start copying notes while the teacher dictated. After Devon removed the illusion, the students realised that they were writing notes in their friends/neighbour’s books, while the neighbour messed up someone else’s notes. This problem always led to fights. Students kicked and punched each other. Only after the teacher intervened, peace returned to the classroom. Whenever Devon used the illusion trick, students almost always received detention for bad behaviour.
