Traders’ meet may decide on agitation

Body terms 75 days of GST ‘nightmare’

The Confederation of All India Traders, representing close to six crore small businesses, will discuss the prospects for launching a national agitation over the implementation hitches being faced by businesses in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime.

Terming the first 75 days of the GST regime ‘a complete nightmare’ for traders, the confederation has red-flagged the GST Network’s failure to cope with the filing of returns, the confusion about rates and compliance procedures and the inclusion of several mass usage items in the highest tax bracket of 28% as dampeners in the new indirect tax regime.

A two-day meeting has been convened by the Confederation in Surat from September 18, where the future course of action, including ‘a national agitation on GST’ will be decided upon by trade representatives.

“No direct dialogue and lack of coordination with trade bodies by the Central and State Governments as well as the GST Council has further aggravated the situation,” the Confederation said in a statement on Friday.
