Samsung has installed its patented Onyx Cinema LED screen at an INOX Leisure cinema in Mumbai.

This is the second such giant screen to be installed in India, the first being at a PVR cinema in Delhi in August this year.

Though Samsung and INOX declined to disclose the exact price of the screen, it costs between $500,000 and $700,000 (more ₹5 crore) per installation, according to sources.

Onyx Cinema LED screens were first unveiled in South Korea in 2017. So far, 26 such screens have been installed in cinemas across the world, including the two in India.

“Onyx, another transformational innovation by Samsung, will change the way we watch movies and mark a new chapter in the history of cinema. The 100-year-old projection technology will be a thing of the past,” said Puneet Sethi, vice-president, Consumer Electronics Enterprise Business, Samsung India.

“One of the advantages of Onyx Cinema LED is that it can uphold exceptional picture quality even in ambient lighting conditions. So, multiple business models can be built around these screens to quick return in investment,” he added.

Mr. Sethi said by this year end, Samsung would supply two more such screens in India and by the end of next year, the plan is to sell a total of 15 to 20 such screens. All these will imported from Korea.

Commenting on the installation of the first screen at INOX’s cinema at Inorbit Mall in Malad, Alok Tandon, chief executive officer, INOX Leisure Ltd., said, “We are committed to providing the best cinematic experience to our customers. Our association with Samsung to launch the unique cinema LED technology in Mumbai is a testimony of this commitment to them.”

“Technology and innovation are at the core of INOX and we continue to redefine the cinema viewing experience by combining luxury with technology to present the best experience to our audience,” he said.

He said at the moment, the objective was to provide unique viewing experience to cinema goers and no decision had been made to increase ticket prices.
