Stocks in Tokyo surged Wednesday morning after Wall Street’s overnight rally. A weaker yen lifted export-oriented shares.

In Tokyo, the benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 210.37 points, or 2.1 per cent, to trade at 10,244.62 while the broader Topix index was up 15.70 points, or 1.77 per cent, at 900.87.

US stocks rose strongly overnight amid some positive manufacturing data from New York and gains in financial shares and commodities.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar traded at 90.24-26 yen, up from Tuesday’s 5 pm quote of 89.81-82 yen.

The euro traded at 1.3764—3765 dollars, up from 1.3648—3649 dollars Tuesday, and at 124.23—24 yen, up from 122.58—62 yen.
