This one is a tall figure in the IT (information technology) space and forms an important constituent of an iconic name in the Indian corporate world. This Tata company has now set on a mission to restore an iconic structure in Mumbai to its original glory.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has just inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Mumbai University for the restoration of the iconic Rajabai Clock Tower and Library in co-ordination with the Indian Heritage Society, Mumbai.
The Rajabai Clock Tower is located in the confines of the Fort campus of the University of Mumbai. Modelled on the lines of London's ‘ Big Ben', the tower stands at a height of 85 metres. The foundation stone was laid on March 1, 1869, and the construction was completed in November, 1878. The tower was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
Gothic style
It reflects the Gothic and Venetian style of architecture.
TCS will fund the project to the tune of Rs.4.20 crore, which includes the restoration of Mumbai Library, located at the base of the tower. The objective is to make the conventional library into a hi-tech one which houses a collection of rare books. The architectural restoration of the library and tower will be done by Brinda Somaya. The make-over plan of the structure will involve strengthening the structure; stone cleaning and consolidation; repairing the damaged parts of the structure; removal of biological growth and upgrading the services.
The MoU was signed by TCS Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director N. Chandrasekaran and Mumbai University Vice- Chancellor Rajan M. Welukar in the presence of Maharastra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan.
The event was also attended by TCS Vice-Chairman S. Ramadorai, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director S. Mahalingam, Indian Heritage Society Chairperson Anita Garware and renowned architect Brinda Somaya.
Mr. Chandrasekaran said, “The Rajabai Clock Tower and Library is iconic architectural landmark of south Mumbai and TCS is proud to work with the Indian Heritage Society to completely restore this heritage structure to its original glory.'' TCS, he said, was established in Mumbai. ``We are committed to preserving Mumbai rich heritage, which has a strong historical significance to the city and the nation,'' he added.
