M&M is planning to launch its global SUV christened XUV 5oo (pronounced 5 double oh) on September 28.

This is the first product designed and developed from its world class R&D facility at Mahindra Research Valley near Chennai.

In an interaction with this correspondent, Rajan Wadhera, Chief Executive - Technology, Product Development and Sourcing and Member of Group Executive Board, said the new SUV with advanced monocoque design (body on-frame) for exceptional ride and handling, would meet stringent crash protection standards and emission targets of Europe.

The vehicle architecture was co-created based on global consumer needs identified in different countries. It has 2.2 litre m-hawk 140 bhp engine with 6-speed gearbox.

Mr. Wadhera said the new XUV5oo would be launched initially in India and South Africa and subsequently in Australia and South East Asia.

Both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions would be available, he said.

Positioned above the successful sports utility veicle Scorpio, the vehicle would be turned out in the company's plant located at Chakan (Pune), he said.

Mr. Wadhera said the vehicle would have 95 per cent indigenous content while some critical imported components would be procured from domestic suppliers.
