Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator Pvt Ltd, a joint venture between Toshiba Corporation and JSW Group (JSW), will be investing nearly $160 million in its upcoming facility at Ennore near Chennai.
Toshiba JSW will be manufacturing and marketing mid-to-large-sized steam turbines and generators ranging from 500 MW to 1,000 MW, for highly efficient super-critical thermal power plants in India.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Itaru Ishibashi, Managing Director, said the company was set up in September 2008, and was expected to start operations in January 2011.
Mr. Ishibashi said Toshiba’s power equipment production facility in Yokohama, Japan, would support Toshiba JSW in ramping up manufacturing, and in working towards establishing independent production scales of 3,000 MW a year by 2014.
He said the company had already started recruiting staff and planned to hire 500 people by 2014.
Nearly 80 recruits had already been sent to Japan for improving their technical skills.
He said Toshiba JSW would be manufacturing blades, nozzle diaphragm and casting. He did not rule out the possibility of procuring parts and materials for steam turbines and generators from local manufacturers, provided the materials were on a par with the international standards.
Atsuhiko Izumi, Executive Vice-President, Toshiba Corporation Power Systems Company, said the company was putting up a power plant (500MW x 2 units) at Mundra in Gurajat in collaboration with Tata Power.
The Joint Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of JSW Energy, S.S. Rao, said “JSW Group is keen to promote super-critical technology and this led to less consumption of coal.”
