Kharif sowing reaches 999 lakh hectares

Coarse cereals such as bajra, jowar and ragi, have been sown across 17.3 million hectares as of last week during the ongoing Kharif season in Rajasthan.

Coarse cereals such as bajra, jowar and ragi, have been sown across 17.3 million hectares as of last week during the ongoing Kharif season in Rajasthan.

The total area sown under kharif as on September 4, 2015 has reached 998.67 lakh hectares compared to 979.40 lakh hectare last year at this time, according to Agriculture Ministry’s data.

According to the latest data, the area under pulses and oilseeds has increased during the period under reference, despite a deficient monsoon.

Rice has been sown/transplanted in 361.46 lakh hectares against 357.47 lakh hectare, pulses sown in 108.37 lakh hectare (97.56 lakh hectare), coarse cereals 179.48 lakh hectare (170.42 lakh hectare) and oilseeds 178.55 lakh hectare (173.38 lakh hectare).

Among cash crops, area under cotton was lower 114.17 lakh hectare against 123.70 lakh tonnes,

The area under sugarcane is almost at the same level at 48.84 lakh hectare against 48.74 lakh hectare.
