Poor sales at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in July dragged down the overall wholesale sales performance of the Tata Motors Group by 5% in July despite a strong showing by the group’s commercial vehicles division.

“The Tata Motors Group global wholesales in July 2018, including JLR, were at 92,639 units, lower by 5%, as compared to July 2017,” Tata Motors said in a statement. Global wholesales of all Tata Motors’ commercial vehicles and the Tata Daewoo range in July 2018 were at 40,443, higher by 29%, over July 2017, it said.

Global wholesales of all passenger vehicles in July 2018 were at 52,196 units, lower by 22%, compared with July 2017, it added.

Global wholesales for JLR were 35,007 vehicles (JLR’s July numbers include 4,076 vehicles at the firm’s Chery Jaguar Land Rover unit in China). Jaguar wholesales for the month were 12,427 vehicles, while Land Rover wholesales for the month were 22,580 vehicles.

On Friday, JLR had reported a total retail sales of 36,144 vehicles in July 2018, down 21.6% year-on-year, primarily reflecting transitional issues in certain markets.

Market volatility

“Retails for July were down in China (46.9%), reflecting continued market volatility in the first month of the duty change as well as trade tensions. Sales were also down in Europe (26.5%) and the U.K. (18.3%), impacted by the industry wide issue of delays in WLTP certification of 2019 model vehicles,” JLR said.

Retail sales were also down in North America (9.5%). However, sales in overseas markets rose 8.6%.
