Aviation regulator DGCA has asked Jet Airways to assess availability of planes and plan its flight schedules well in time to avoid cancellations.

The airline has been forced to cancel several flights due to grounding of planes because of non-payment of lease rentals to aircraft lessors. A total of six planes have been grounded in March alone.

According to information shared by the airline, the airline has grounded 25 aircraft since Feb 7 due to payment issues.

According to the airline’s website, it has cancelled over 300 flights. Most of these cancellations are for flights scheduled for March.

“The DGCA has asked Jet Airways to work out availability of planes and provide realistic schedules in order to avoid passenger inconvenience,” Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, told The Hindu .

He added that 83 planes with Jet Airways were flying. This means that a third of the airline's fleet-size, i.e 40 planes, have been grounded due to various reasons. The airline had a total of 123 planes as on February 21.
