German carmaker Volkswagen’s Indian unit is likely to recall next month over one lakh diesel cars in the country impacted by the global diesel emission scandal, highly placed industry expert told The Hindu on Thursday.
The source added that the move would affect Polo hatchback, Polo Cross crossover, and Vento, Jetta and Passat sedan cars. Meanwhile, in an official statement, Volkswagen said it will come out with details on the impact in India due to scandal by the end of next month.
It added that Volkswagen Group India’s representatives met officials from Ministry of Heavy Industries and ARAI on Thursday and updated them on the evaluations so far. Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the country's testing agency, has been asked by the government to probe if Volkswagen manipulated emission tests in India as it did in the U.S. and Europe. ARAI is expected to summit the government this month.
“Since there is a complex combination of several brands, various models, different engine variants and gearboxes as well as different model years that need to be analysed, establishing detailed facts is taking a longer time,” the company said. Volkswagen will present its results from the evaluations by the end of November 2015, it said, adding, during this period, company representatives will stay in regular touch with ARAI to keep the authorities updated on the analysis. The next steps will depend on the findings from these evaluations.
