Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday urged the banks, both nationalised and private, to reach out to uncovered villages through modern technology.
Mr. Mukerjee, who inaugurated State bank of India’s (SBI) customer service point (CSP) at Barole village here in Murshidabad district of West Bengal said only 88,000 villages out of 6.5 lakh were covered by banks.
He said banks should open ‘touch points’ like CSP to reach out to villages which do not have bank branches.
Mr. Mukherjee said this is required for financial inclusion and inclusive growth.
Earlier, during the day the Union minister opened a branch and training centre of Union Bank in the same area.
SBI Chairman O P Bhatt said with the opening of the CSP at Barole the bank had made itself present in one lakh villages.
