A five member-committee headed by Sam Pitroda was on Thursday constituted by the Railway Ministry to look into the optimum usage of Information and Communication Technology in the Railways.
The committee will propose ways and means to use IT to improve security, safety in railway services besides suggesting ways to enhance productivity and efficiency of the PSU behemoth, said a senior railway official.
Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced the setting up of such a committee in her budget speech this year.
Member (Electrical Railway Board), managing director of Rail Tel Corporation and managing director of Centre for Railway Information System would be the members of the committee.
The two other members would be Partha Mukhopadhdhya, the transport economist at the Centre for Policy Research, and Executive Director (Telecom Development) Railway Board.
The official said the committee would also suggest how to optimally utilise the Railway's existing IT infrastructure like its fibre optics network and help it take ICT to the door step in remote areas.
Besides, it will recommend ICT applications to improve freight and track management and modernisation of stations, vendor operation etc.
