Ganesha Ecosphere, a Kanpur-based PET bottle recycling company, is setting up its third facility at Temra (Uttar Pradesh) with an investment of ₹100 crore, B.P. Sultania, joint president, told The Hindu.
The expansion work would be completed by September and the plant would have a production capacity of 25,200 tonnes a year. Ganesha currently has facilities at Kanpur and Rudrapur (Uttarakhand) with a capacity to recycle PET bottles and produce 87,600 tonnes of recycled polyester staple fibre a year.
With the facility at Temra, annual capacity would rise to 1,12,800 tonnes. The firm, which posted a turnover of ₹685 crore last fiscal, has a 20% market share in the recycled fibre segment. While almost 70% of the fibre goes to textile mills, the rest is consumed by customers like fibrefill product makers and the non-woven sector.
“The demand for fibre is growing. But, there are challenges due to a shortage in availability of raw material,” he said. The government banned the import of PET bottle scrap last year. “We are appealing to the Union Government to permit imports of the scrap PET bottles as demand for the recycled fibre is growing in the country,” he said.
