A delay in the roll-out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) appears certain as the rate for the new indirect tax regime as well as the date of its launch is likely to be finalised by the end of this month.

After a meeting with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here on Friday, Chairman of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on GST Asim Dasgupta said: “We will meet by [the] month-end and hope to finalise the date and the rate of GST.”

Dr. Dasgupta explained that the States need more time to arrive at a consensus on the new tax regime.
