From the Archives (October 17, 1919): Turkish Sovereignty.

The Hon’ble Khan Saheb Haji Abdullah Haji Kasim, Member, Madras Legislative Council writes: — The problem of the Turkish sovereignty is at the present moment engaging the entire attention of the whole Islamic world. This is so because of two weighty reasons — reasons which cannot, under any circumstances, be ignored, as they vitally touch the heart of every Muslim. Firstly Turkey is the only last surviving independent Moslem power, maintaining, though to a very small extent, the political dignity of Mussalmans, and secondly the spiritual sovereignty of His Majesty the Sultan is a factor which is not to be trifled with. The question of Khilafat is one which at once presents a religious aspect. There is no gainsaying the fact that a quasi patriotic feeling for religion pervades the whole Islamic world, and it is with this feeling that all Muslims look up to the Sultan as their Khalifa. Blessings are invoked on him on Fridays from the pulpit in each and every mosque.
