Soon after consuming the meal the students complained of headache and uneasiness followed by a burning sensation in their mouth and throat. They were rushed to a nearby hospital. District official, Jagdish Kumar said the students are now safe. Senior doctor, Om Prakash suspected, based on forensic tests on samples, that children were food poisoned. The midday meal scheme, which gives more than 100 million school pupils a free lunch, is the largest such programme in the world, widely lauded as one of the most successful welfare measures in India.
