Wimbledon winners to receive 1.1 million pounds

April 19, 2011 05:10 pm | Updated 05:10 pm IST - LONDON

Wimbledon organisers have announced that the singles champions at the 2011 tournament will each receive 1.1 million pounds ($1.8 million), an increase of 10 per cent from last year.

Last year, prize money for the singles champions broke the 1 million pound mark for the first time.

The total prize fund in 2011 is 14.6 million pounds ($23.8 million), an increase of 6.4 per cent from last year. Because the British pound has strengthened since last year, the increase is even larger when counted in dollars.
