Top seed Sumit Nagal warded off V.M. Ranjeet’s challenge as he came back from a set down to progress to the second round of the MCC-SRS ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament on Tuesday.

Nagal was a bit rusty in the opening set and the experienced 32-year old Ranjeet took full advantage to take the set with a break in the eighth game.

Uncharacteristic

Ranjeet was steady and retrieved every ball while Sumit made uncharacteristic mistakes.

Ranjeet once again broke Sumit to lead 2-1 in the second set and was on course to upset Nagal.

But, the No. 1 seed found his rhythm and range as he stroked freely and powerfully, hitting winners from both the flanks.

Nagal not only broke Ranjeet’s next two service games but also began to hold his service easily to take the set 6-3.

Nagal had a break in the opening game of the third set and a tiring Ranjeet could not stop the rampage as Nagal won eleven of the last 12 games to wrap up the decider 6-0 and move into the second round.

In the upset of the day, qualifier and former junior champion Arjun Kadhe proved too good for the fourth-seeded Lucas Gomez of Mexico to notch up a straight-sets win.
