Sania Mirza will make another attempt to pull India into the elite group in the region in the Asia Oceania Fed Cup Group II women’s tennis tournament to be staged in Hyderabad from April 14 to 18.
The world No. 5 doubles star did not get a chance last time in Astana, Kazakhstan, as India had lost both the singles in the semifinals against Hong Kong. The team had done well to beat formidable New Zealand then.
She will once again stick to the doubles, leaving the task of winning the doubles to the likes of 255th-ranked Ankita Raina and the 481st-ranked Prarthana Thombare. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has not selected the team yet, and is scheduled to do so in 10 days.
India will find itself with other teams like Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Oman, Pacific Oceania, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Turkmenistan.
The teams will be divided into three groups of three teams each, and one group of four. After the league stage, the toppers of the four groups will compete in the semifinals. The winner of the tournament will progress to Group I next season.
