Fifth-seeded V.M. Ranjeet of India rallied to beat Laslo Urrutia Fuentes of Chile 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 and enter the quarterfinals of the Vasan Eye Care–ITF men’s Futures tournament, organised by Tiruchi District Tennis Association, at the Union Club here on Wednesday.
The opening set saw both players struggle to hold serve. When the scorecard read 5-5, Ranjeet and Fuentes had already traded three breaks each. Up 40-30 in the 11th game, Ranjeet made three unforced errors and lost serve. The Chilean held serve in the next game to clinch the set 7-5.
The second set was a one-sided affair. The Indian gained control of his shots and broke his opponent twice before pocketing the set 6-1.
Both players were with serve till 3-3 in the decider. The fifth seed went up 15-40 with Fuentes serving in the seventh game. He then secured the break with an angled volley and held his own to go up 5-3.
The Chilean, who staved off a matchpoint before holding serve in the ninth, broke Ranjeet in the subsequent game to level at 5-5.
The Indian, however, went ahead breaking Fuentes’ serve in the 11th before holding his own to end the match on his third matchpoint.
In another fixture, Filippo Leonardi of Italy eased past sixth-seeded Vijayant Malik of India 6-2, 6-2.
