Garvit Batra displayed his big game and sound temperament to get past the talented B.R. Nikshep 6-3, 6-4 in the boys’ under-16 pre-quarterfinals of the Fenesta National sub-junior tennis championship on Wednesday.
The way Garvit stepped up his game was impressive, as he recovered from an early break of serve in both sets, to beat Nikshep who was stroking well on both flanks.
Garvit had to tackle a tricky shoulder injury, but it was just a temporary setback for a few weeks for the strong lad with a big serve. He needs to come up with a strong showing in the quarterfinals against the fourth-seeded Fatehdeep Singh.
The setback in the under-16 competition helped Nikshep focus better in the under-14 section, where he is the top seed.
In the girls’ under-16 category, second-seeded Pranjala Yadlapalli warded off a spirited challenge from the diminutive Mihika Yadav with silky smooth strokes that were timed to perfection.
The 13-year-old Andhra girl, who had won the under-18 title last week, will meet Nayanika Reddy in the quarterfinals.
