Well-deserved win for Alinghi

April 14, 2013 09:57 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 12:10 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

“Alinghi continued its dominance in the only point score race that was sailed on Sunday, which also happened to be the final double point race. The Swiss vessel worked her way through the set from an initial mid-fleet position to overall triumph in the Extreme Sailing Series E40 championships at the Marina Bay,” sailing legend Nick Moloney told The Hindu from Singapore.

“Well it was a strange day here...a lot of rain in the morning and very light winds throughout the day. With a double point race as the only and final race sailed, the contest for second and third positions overall was wide open.

Team Red Bull sailed conservatively yet finished stronglyenough to secure second place and team SAP sailed a fantastic race to finish third,” added Moloney.

Alinghi’s helmsman, the unflappable Morgan Larson led his squad to a well-deserved win.

“We're ecstatic! It's just been a great week for theteam. We had a great time here in Singapore which really helped us to perform. It's a great city, with tough sailing conditions, but that's the same for everybody and we just had that little bit of luck along the way and we also did a great job,” said the Swiss side’s skipper.

Roman Hagara’s Red Bull Sailing Team posed the biggest threat to Larson on Sunda, but the two-time Olympic champion knew it was a tough task to overhaul the Swiss in a single race and did well to hold his nerve to finish second, equalling his result from Act 1 in Muscat.

Red Bull Sailing is now tied on points with Alinghi at the top of the overall Series leader board.

The next leg will be in Qingdao, China’s Olympic sailing city from May 2 to 5.

The results: 1. Alinghi, Switzerland (Morgan Larson, Stuart Pollard, Pierre-Yves Jorand, Nils Frei,Yves Detrey) 198 points. 2. Red Bull, Austria (Roman Hagara, Hans Peter Steinacher, Matthew Adams, Pierre Le Clainche, Graeme Spence) 163 points. 3. SAP Extreme, Denmark (Jes Gram-Hansen, Rasmus Kostner, Pete Cumming, Mikkel Røssberg, Nicolai Sehested) 161 points.
