Petroleum Sports Promotion Board's Soumyajit Ghosh defeated Gujarat's Harmeet Desai 11-5, 14-16, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9, while K. Shamini (PSPB) scored an 11-5, 13-11, 11-9, 11-5 victory over teammate Poulomi Ghatak to clinch the men's and women's singles titles respectively in the South Zone National ranking table tennis championship which concluded here on Tuesday.

Soumyajit was aggressive right from the beginning and gave little room for his rival to stage a comeback.

Exposure helped

“I owe this victory to my stint at Sweden. The exposure helped improve my performance,” he said.

In a one-sided women's final, Shamini tackled an impatient and inconsistent Poulomi Ghatak to beat her in straight games. She kept her cool when the chips were down.

“This is my third National title of the year,” she said.

Sathiyan triumphs

G. Sathiyan (PSPB), who lost to Soumyajit in the men's semifinals, avenged his defeat by beating him in the youth boys' final 6-11, 11-1, 11-3, 5-11, 11-5, 11-8.

In the youth girls' final, Ankita Das of North Bengal scored an emphatic11-6, 11-7, 11-7, 14-12 victory over B. Mallika.
