FIDE Master Shardul Gagare continued his giant-killing spree on the third day in a row when he downed Grandmaster Sahaj Grover in the fifth Rose Valley Kolkata Open Grandmasters chess tournament at the Gorky Sadan on Wednesday.
Arvindh Chithabaram too did well to hold GM Abhijit Kunte, while GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly was too good for Russian GM Alexander Fominyh in 35 moves.
GM Sandipan Chanda, GM Deep Sengupta, International Master Saptarshi Roy, Diptayan Ghosh, FM Sayantan Das, IM Argyadip Das and WGM Mary Ann Gomes also came up with standout performances.
WGM Nisha Mohota had to settle for a draw and IM Suvrajit Saha lost his match for the second day running. On the top board, Indian GM Deepan Chakkravarthy held top-seeded GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek of Poland after a four-hour battle of wits.
Marat Dzhumaev of Ukraine emerged sole leader with three points.
