Shagun keeps quota place

February 18, 2012 02:12 am | Updated 02:12 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Shagun Chowdhary's noteworthy performance — a 65 in the second trials — at the Moti Bagh Gun Club (Patiala) on Friday helped the shooter preserve her Olympic quota place in women's trap.

Shagun, who was fourth in the shotgun World Championship last year to earn the quota, finished with an overall average of 66.5, including five merit points. She had rounds of 24, 19 and 22.

Seema Tomar, who won a silver in a World Cup in 2010, ended with an average of 62.25 following scores of 61 and 60 in the trials after a 64 in the National championship.

Varsha ahead

Varsha Varman nosed fractionally ahead of Shreyasi Singh with an average of 59.75, as the latter had a below-par 53 in the second trial. Shreyasi had also shot a relatively low 57 in the first trial after a 64 in the National event.

National champion Varsha Tomar may not be able to make the National squad as she was fifth with an average of 58.5. A round of 53 in the first trial had spoilt her chances, and a 61 failed to lift her fortunes.

Snehlata Singh Rajawat was sixth and last at 56.75.

In men's trap, Asian champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu was on 68, one-point behind National champion Zoravar Singh, after three rounds.

Prithviraj Tondaiman (68), Anwer Sultan (66), Anirudh Singh (66) and Mansher Singh (67) followed in that order, with two more rounds to be shot on Saturday.
