Seema Punia gave India a second track and field medal by clinching the silver in women’s discus throw of the athletic events of the Commonwealth Games here on Friday.

The Indian had a season’s best throw of 61.61m off her fifth effort as she finished second best behind Australian gold medallist Dani Samuels.

Samuels had a best of 64.88m through her fourth trial, to save the top place of the podium, after towering over the field all along.

Krishna Poonia, the gold medal winner at the New Delhi Games in 2010, finished fifth with a best effort of 57.84m against her name.

4x400 team in final

Meanwhile India, in its defence of the gold medal won in New Delhi 2010, qualified for the final of the women’s 4x400 metres relay.

However, the entry of the Indian quartet of Debashree Mazumdar, Tintu Luka, Ashwini Akkunji and M.R. Poovamma came about as only a lucky loser after the foursome finished in a poor fifth place in the second heat of the event.

The Indians were timed at 3:33.67, far behind England which won in a time of 3:27.88.

Sahana Kumar was placed eighth in the women’s high jump final after clearing 1.86m. She went out of the medal contention after failing to clear 1.89m in all her three attempts.
