Rathore back in the reckoning

January 24, 2011 12:26 am | Updated October 13, 2016 09:33 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Ronjan Sodhi shot a round of 137 in the second selection trial on Sunday to top the table among the double trap marksmen in the race for berths in the national squad for the forthcoming World Cups.

The Asian Games gold medallist, Ronjan had shot 136 in the first trial after scoring 131 in the national championship.

With merit points for the World Cup final gold, Asian Games gold, world rank and world record, in his kitty, it would be very difficult for any shooter to displace Ronjan from the top.

National champion Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore came into the reckoning as he followed his remarkable performance with rounds of 133 each in the two selection trials. With Mohammed Ashab staying strong following rounds of 132 and 137 in the trials after 138 on par with Rathore in the national championship, the Olympic silver medallist may just about pip Sangram Dahiya for a berth in the national team.

Dahiya had fared better in the trials with rounds of 136 and 138, but had shot only 133 in the national championship.

A regular member of the national team in recent times, Vikram Bhatnagar faltered with a round of 125 in the first trial, which may prove costly though he had shot 137 in the second trial after 138 in the national championship.

Among the juniors, Shayan Masood was on top with rounds of 131 and 132 in the trials after 131 in the national championship.

World junior champion and world junior record holder, Asher Noria, a member of the Indian team in the last Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, went out of reckoning as he failed to appear for the trials, after faring miserably with a score of 109 in the national championship.

The second trials for trap and skeet will finish over the next two days.
