The mystery woman seen next to India’s flagbearer Sushil Kumar at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games was a cast member who “should not have been there,” London organising committee chairman Sebastian Coe said on Sunday.
“I hear she was a cast member who got slightly overexcited,” Coe told a news conference.
News about her role at the Games apparently reached Coe during a news conference at the media centre at the Olympic Park. In later answers to questions, Coe added the words “possibly and probably” to her description as a cast member.
Coe said he would speak to the Indian delegation at the London Games about the incident, but declined to answer the question of whether the woman would be arrested.
He stressed that the woman would have undergone all the relevant security procedures to gain access to the Olympic Park. “She should not have been there. But don’t run away with the idea that she just walked in.” He would look at how such an incident could be prevented from happening again. “We’ll look at it for next opening ceremony,” he joked.
