Malaika Goel clinched the air pistol gold 0.3 point ahead of Haniyeh Rostamiyan of Iran in the women’s youth section in the sixth Asian Air Gun Championship in Tehran, Iran. Malaika had topped the qualifiers with 381 points and led for the most part in the final before the Iranian caught up on the last six shots for a dramatic finish. With Yashaswini and Gauri, Malaika ensured the team gold for India, ahead of China.
In youth women’s air rifle, Prachi Gadkari missed a better medal in a shoot-off with Najmeh Khedmati of Iran after the two had tied on 184.9, and settled for the bronze. Mampi Das qualified in the fourth place, and slipped to fifth.
In men’s 50-metre rifle 3-position event, Olympian Sanjeev Rajput qualified in the third place with a total of 1172, but eventually finished fifth.
Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), stated that it was a successful outing for the 65-member Indian squad as it bagged 38 medals with nine gold and 12 silver.
