Madrid said it will bid for the 2020 Olympics, hoping to replicate Pyeongchang’s perseverance in winning on a third consecutive attempt.
Madrid Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon confirmed the Spanish capital’s candidature on Wednesday.
Ruiz-Gallardon said the bid would provide a much-needed boost to Spain’s economy, which has been battered by recession and unemployment.
Madrid lost bids to London for the 2012 Olympics and Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Games. Last week, the South Korean city of Pyeongchang was awarded the 2018 Winter Olympics after narrow defeats for the 2010 and 2014 Games.
Rome and Turkey are also bidding for the 2020 Olympics, with Tokyo expected to announce its candidacy later in the week.
