Lal Dinmawia walks away with best boxer award

Mizoram's bantamweight Lal Dinmawia walked away with the ‘best boxer' award following a 17-8 points win over Uttarakhand's Arun in the 54kg final at the 27th National Junior Boxing Championships.

The champion led 5-2 in the first round, kept his cool in the second at 5-4 before displaying his skill in the third 7-2.

Maharashtra's Kallicharan Kharare was adjudged the ‘best loser' for a rousing fightback in the 57kg title bout at the Balewadi Sports Complex on Sunday. Haryana's Deepak fought a gritty rival and vocal home support to win a close verdict 9-8. Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) scooped eight golds out of nine finals to win the team title.

Sura sizzles

Deepak Sura from Hissar (Haryana) showcased the boxing talent in his State, defeating SSCB's Deeapk Kadian on points 15-13 in the 70kg final.

Taking up boxing just two years ago, the powerfully built light-middle weight won on his first entry in a National-level competition, displaying confidence to slug it out and ability to soak up punches.

The light fly final brought out the best in P.L. Prasad (SSCB) and K Shyam Kumar (AP), these 48kg finalists going all out for three rounds of frenzied punching. The two embraced in the ring when the bell rang to signal an end to the hostilities.

Shyam Kumar (AP) 16-10. 50kg: Naveen Kumar (SSCB) bt Rakesh (Har) 10-6. 52kg: Sandeep Badri (SSCB) bt A Silambarasan (TN) 11-7. 54 kg: Lal Dinmawia (Miz) bt Arun (Utk) 17-8. 57kg: Deepak Pahal (Har) bt Kallicharan Kharare (Mah) 9-8. 60kg: Sukhdev (MP) bt Sanjay Thapa (Utk) 8-7. 63kg: Manjeet (SSCB) bt Neeraj (Chd) 10-9. 66kg: C Dadu Singh (SSCB) bt Akshay Rawal (Utk) RSC. 70kg: Deepak Sura (Har) bt Deepak Kadian (SSCB) 15-13. 75kg: Sandeep Sharma (SSCB) bt Deepak Sheron (Har) 9-2. 80kg: Gurwinder Singh (Pun) bt Jay Sayena (Utk) 18-11. 80+kg: K Navneet Singh Rathore (SSCB) bt Rishabh Purohit (MP).
