Uttar Pradesh’s Priyanka created a national and new meet record in the 10,000 metre walk event in the under-20 girls’ segment of the Jio 30th National Junior Athletic championship at Indira Gandhi Municipal stadium here on Thursday. She bettered Punjab’s Kushbir Kaur’s record, set in 2010 by clocking 49:16.51 seconds.

“My performance improved vastly after shifting to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre at Bangalore, and my training with Russian coach Alexander is paying off,” said Priyanka, who has been performing consistently in the age groups competitions.

Haryana’s Ashish Jhakar created a new meet record by hurling the hammer to a distance of 67.09 metres in the under-16 boys’ category, eclipsing his state-mate Sukhdev Singh’s efforts of 66.51m in 2006. But, he missed the national record (67.10m) by 1 (one) centimetre.

The day’s third new meet record was registered by Kerala’s Maymon Poulose in the boys’ 100m hurdles of the under-18 division.

Tamil Nadu’s Priyadarshini won a grand double in the under-16 girls’ segment — gold in long jump (5.63m) and 100m hurdles (15.04s).
