Former world table tennis doubles champion Peter Karlsson said here on Wednesday that India has the potential to be a top nation in the sport and the next 10-15 years will augur well for the sport in the country.

“The potential is a little bit same in what I see in China. China is of course 15-20 years ahead of India. India is a big country and I am sure there will be a big number of young players in the future. These players have lot of energy. They are eager to work, eager to achieve something. There is actually a very good potential for the future,” said the Swede.

Karlsson, a high performance coach attached to the International Table Tennis Federation and a brand ambassador for Stag (TT equipment manufacturer), was speaking on the first day of a four-day training camp for kids.

Former National champion Niraj Bajaj is associated with the venture.

India’s National coach, Kamlesh Mehta, former women’s international Monalisa Mehta and Maharashtra paddler, Mahendra Chiplunkar, assisted the Swede at the clinic held under the aegis of Mumbai City Table Tennis Association at the air-conditioned University Sports Pavilion.
