Nick Anstey is thrilled with his current tour of South India, an area famed for its beaches. The Australian is a junior World Cupper in beach volleyball and he is keen to have a look at some of India’s famed beaches, including Chennai’s Marina.
“The weather is fantastic here, almost feels like being at home,” said the 20-year-old from Adelaide, the star of South Australia’s Norwood Bears Club which played an indoor game against the star-studded Cochin Spikers here on Wednesday night.
“I hear the beaches here are fantastic…I want to go around, have a look at them. You should have fun on the beach, have more of beach volleyball here. In Australia, it’s a big hit in the social circles,” said Anstey.
Late comer
The youngster came to volleyball rather late.
“I’ve been in volleyball for only about four years. Before that, I was into Australian Rules football. But since I had the height (6’8) and build, people advised me to try volleyball. And here I am.”
Anstey, along with his partner Hamish Moore, played in the FIVB Swatch Junior World Championship in Halifax, Canada, recently.
“I’ve also played 2010 Junior World Championship in Portugal…I’m predominantly a beach volleyballer,” he said.
Anstey was all praise for the Cochin Spikers team which had some of the country’s best players, including Tom Joseph, Azeez and Vibin M. George.
“The Indians played awesome, they are a fantastic bunch,” said the youngster, a product of South Australia Sports Institute. “And your people are a very friendly lot, a very happy lot.”
The Norwood Bears team left for Chennai on Thursday morning.
