October 07, 2010 02:01 am | Updated 02:01 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Ashish Kumar, who performed creditably to top in floor exercise and vault, finished at the eighth spot in the Commonwealth Games men's individual all-around artistic gymnastics at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday.

Ashish, the lone Indian in the competition, surprised everybody by emerging best in floor exercise (14.85 points) and vault (16.2).

However, competing against gymnasts from Australia, England, Canada and New Zealand, the home athlete managed only the eighth place with a total of 81.8.

Ashish was less than four points away from England's Luke Folwell, who won the gold medal with 85.55.

The silver and bronze went to Englishman Reiss Beckford (85.45) and Australia's J. Jefferis (84.75) respectively.

Home team's Partha Mondal, who had qualified for the event, withdrew because of the knee injury he had picked up during the team competition on Monday.

Now, the Indian team will look forward to the individual apparatus event and hope for the best from Ashish

“There is a chance (in individual apparatus),” said Ashish, who scored 12.5 in pommel horse, 13.7 in rings, 12.7 in parallel bars and 11.85 in horizontal bar.

No Indian could qualify for the women's individual all-around contest.

Australia swept the women's medals. Laura Mitchell (58.2), Emily Little (55.85) and Georgia Bonora (54.95) claimed the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.
