Prominent cycling coach Ruma Chattopadhyay died in a hit-and-run case early on Tuesday morning.

The tragic incident happened when chief coach Ruma, training the cyclists for the UCI juniors track World championship (in Glasgow from August 7 to 11) on the Noida Expressway, was hit from behind by a speeding car around 6 a.m.

“Other coaches assisting her immediately took her to the nearby Kailash Hospital, where she was declared brought-dead,” said Cycling Federation of India (CFI) Assistant Secretary V.N. Singh.

Ruma, a spinster, was 51 and is survived by her mother and five sisters. The Kolkata-based coach was employed with the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). According to a CFI official, her body would be cremated in Kolkata.

Prominent figure

Over the past few years Ruma, a Grade 1 coach and an Executive Member of the CFI, had been a prominent figure among the support staff of the Indian cycling team. She accompanied the team in important assignments like the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and the Asian championship.

Under her guidance, the Indian junior cyclists had won medals in the Asian championship held here earlier this year.

Ruma, a former National champion, started her career in 1986 and competed for nearly a decade. CFI secretary Onkar Singh said Ruma’s demise was a big loss for the sport. “I have not only lost a colleague and a great friend, but also a great sportsperson and an honest and dedicated coach who always propagated high values and discipline (among the cyclists),” he said.

Very sad news indeed. India lost another cycling specialist. I wonder why cycling is practiced on an express highway. Lack of good roads might be the reason why she opted for express highway. Where else she should could practice cycling? Express highway is meant for motor vehicles only. cycling is the most eco-friendly mode of transport.
For distances up to 15-20KM, cycling is the best option for healthy commuting. More and more people are cycling in London. Almost everyone cycles in Amsterdam. India should promote cycling in a big way since we have lots flat roads.

This incident is a grim reminder of the lack of safety on Indian roads
for both pedestrians and drivers of two-wheelers. Cycling is not only
a sport, it is also a way of life for a number of people in the city's
diaspora. It is time there was a movement to educate drivers and
simultaneously enforce traffic rules with seriousness. Countless lives
are lost in the midst of this give and take between reckless drivers
and greedy enforcement officials. As an avid cyclist, I have brushed
against and come out alive of numerous such incidents with only luck
and my quick reflexes to thank for it. Roads are a public amenity
meant for all citizens, not the inheritance of the privileged few.

So sad! Shows both the apathy of the officials in creating proper road
and infrastructure to support a healthy sport like cycling and the
insensitive nature of our people who are both rash and cowardly to run
away after hitting. What a loss for the young talents who would have
gained so much from the expertise and experience of Ms. Ruma. May her
soul rest in peace.
