Kynan Chenai put up a strong performance to make the men’s trap final, but missed the chance to fight for a medal by two points, in the shooting World Cup in Beijing, China, on Friday.
Continuing with his good work overnight when he was in the fourth place with a score of 73, Chenai shot 23 and 25 on Friday morning to tie with three others on 121, and was forced to fight for the last two spots of the final.
In the shoot-off, Chenai and Jiri Liptak of the Czech Republic pulled through ahead of Mauro De Filippis of Italy and Du Yu of China.
While the Czech went on to beat a strong field that included two Olympic champions to take the gold, Chenai fell short of a medal round by two points as he shot 9 in the semifinals.
The only consolation for Chenai was that one of the leaders, the four-time World champion and three-time Olympic medallist Giovanni Pellielo of Italy also fell short of the medal round, with a score of 10 in the semifinals.
Chenai who had finished runner-up to Anirudh Singh in the last national championship, had shot a similar score of 121 in the World Cup in Munich recently, but was pushed down to the 41st spot then.
The bronze medallist of the last World Championship in Munich, Jiri Lipitak shot a perfect round of 15 in the gold medal match to beat the Athens Games champion and the qualification topper, Alexey Alipov, by one point, as the latter missed the 14th bird.
