Borun Chanda passes away

Borun Chanda, founder President of the Tamil Nadu Rowing Association (TARA) and former President of Madras Boat Club, passed away in Kolkata on Friday. He was 72.

A passionate rower attached initially to the Calcutta Rowing Club and then to the MBC, Borun Chanda was a respected technical official in the world of rowing. He played a leading role in introducing the sport as a discipline in Asian Games for the first time in 1982 in Delhi. He was the treasurer when the Rowing Federation of India was formed in 1976.

As President of the MBC, he had organised several competitions like National Championships, ARAE, and the annual Madras-Colombo regatta.

K.V. Balachander, President, MBC, said in a tribute, “Borun was a fine rower and a stalwart administrator. To the rowing fraternity and particularly for the members of the MBC this is a great loss.”

Several officials from across the country also expressed their condolences on Friday. — Special Correspondent
