Boost for carrom

Tournament with ₹5 lakh prize money to be held from April 28

HYDERABAD: The inaugural Haseena memorial Indian Grand Slam championship, with the highest ever prize money for any carrom tournament in the world — ₹5 lakh — will be held at Narenn Convention Centre, Miyapur, here from April 28 to May 1, B.K. Haranath, president, Carrom Association of Telangana State, said.

The tournament will feature a record number of 570 men and 128 woman players in singles and doubles from USA, Malaysia, and Maldives besides India and will be played on 64 boards every day.

D.G.N. Sharma, who officiated in the 1982 World championship, will be the technical director while M.V.L. Narasimha Rao the chief referee.

Some of the familiar names in action include World champion S. Appoorwa, six-time National champion P. Nirmala, former World champion K. Srinivas, and US Open Grand Slam champion R.D. Dinesh Babu.
