Asiad, Day 13 (2. 00 pm till close) - As it happened

November 25, 2010 02:16 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 10:17 am IST

That just about concludes all the action on the 13th day of the 16th Asian Games. Ashwin Achal will be in the house early tomorrow morning to bring you all the action. Until then, see you all.

A quick look at the medal tally does no harm, right? Right on cue, > there you go . If you are not satisfied with that, there is also an other addition. A >seperate Indian medallists section .

18:45 Japan have taken the men's football gold thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over UAE.

>Both the Indian Kabaddi teams - men and women - were expected to make the final and they are on course.

Just a few more medals to be sorted out before the curtains come down on what has been an >enthralling day for India in the track events.

18:21 The bout ends in an anti-climactic manner. Rasulov beats Dinesh by 10 points to four to take the gold in the men's 81 kg category.

18:17 Rasulov leads Dinesh by 6-2 after the end of the first two stanzas. Dinesh needs a miracle in the third and final round to end on the top step of the podium.

18:12 Rasulov leads Dinesh 1-0 after the firs tthree minutes. The commentator says "Dinesh has shown too much respect to Rasulov". Tend to agree but then it was not an all-action opening to the bout.

Moments away from Dinesh Kumar's final bout in the men's 81 kg category against Elshod Rasulov.

Kazhakstan's Dmitriy Karpov had taken the gold in the men's decathlon a bit earlier in the evening session. South Korea and Vietnam occupied the next two steps on the podium.

17:45 I can indeed confirm that the Indian men lost to Philippines 2.5-1.5 in Chess. Staying in Chess, the Indian women lost to Uzbekistan by an identical scoreline. This was the eighth round.

17:38 In the men's football final, UAE and Japan are deadlocked at 0-0 after 52 minutes.

17:28 My goodness. I have not seen a more stranger boxing bout but Vikas has taken the victory by five points to four. Hu did all the fighting while Vikas did all the running and the dodging. But the Indian does not care. Vikas Krishnan gets the gold in the men's 60 kg boxing bout.

17:23 A very strange second round. Vikas did absolutely nothing of note but finds himself in the lead at 4-3. The Chinese was leading 3-2 but Vikas was awarded two extra penalty points. Vikas has shown dogged resistance almost to the point of not even wanting to throw some counter punches so far.

17:21 Unconfirmed reports say that India have lost to Philippines in men's chess 2.5-1.5. Will try and confirm when I have more details.

17:17 Vikas has taken the first point in the final of the men's 60 boxing bout. China's Qing Hu, has been the more aggressive of the two. Make that a point apiece. And the first round ends. It is 1-1 but Hu looks like the more intimidating while Vikas is firmly in his shell.

In the mood for witnessing more gold medals for India, right? India's Vikas Krishnan is up next in the Foshan Gymnasium.

Ramya: "Think there has been a tremendous performance in the athlete section in the last couple of months and I definitely feel this should be a plus point to perform and worth aiming at Olympics 2012. It would be unrealistic to say they will all win but I am sure they will definitely feel motivated to work hard towards this goal and show the best. Huge positive sign [from athletics].

Taking it one step at a time. Will be worth looking at how they perform at the IAAF World Championships and other Grand Prix events before the Olympics.

B. Jaya Krishnan: "Good to see her not repeating the same mistake that other indians did. Great stuff Ashwini"

That is true. Tintu ran her heart out at the beginning of her 800m final which left on fumes at the end.

Ashwini Chidananda receives the gold medal from Suresh Kalmadi. All stand up as the Indian national anthem is being played at the Aoti Main Stadium.

Prashant Arya says "Tintu should have won it, her heat timings as well as personal best are below 2m[inutes] mark. PT Usha, her coach, will be really disappointed and yesterday only she was 100% confident that Tintu will win the gold. Seems she couldn't handle pressure."

Joseph won it in a time of 49.96 seconds.

16:42Stunning from Joseph. He has got the gold by literally poking his nose ahead of the Japanese, who was running his race in a very controlled fashion. In a photo finish, Joseph took the gold for India. A double for India in the 400m hurdles. Who could have thought of that at the start of the day .

16:38 Joseph Abraham is in lane three in the men's 400m hurdles final.

The Foshan Gymnasium, which hosts the boxing bouts, is just about up and running to host its first event of the day. India's Vikas Krishnan will be up against Qu Hing in the men's 60 kg gold medal match. A bit later on, Dinesh Kumar will be in action against Elshod Rasulov in the men's 81 kg gold medal match. Excited?

Got anything to say about that awesome performce by Ashwini? liveresponse@thehindu.co.in. You can also write anything in general about India's track and field performances over the course of the last three months. The India athletes had a relatively remarkable few days at the Commonwealth Games also.

16:25 Ashwini Chidananda takes the gold in the women's 400m hurdles. Mauma finishes in fourth. Brilliant race from start to finish by Ashwini. Taking time to warm-up, she grew into the race. That last 100 made the difference as she eventually won it by some distance.

Jauna Murmu and Ashwini Chidananda will be in action in the women's 400m hurdles final. That race is scheduled to begin at about 16:20 IST - just a shade over five minutes to begin then.

16:12 As easy as you like from China's Hu Yadan. She topped the qualifying in the women's 10m platform. What does she do next? She betters have score to take the gold in the final of the same event. Relentless from the Chinese.

16:08 Saraswathi throws a 47m but the early front-runners have breached the 50m mark. "Some work needed in that throwing arm", says the commentator.

16:03 The women's javelin throw final is up and running at the Aoti Main Stadium. India's Saraswathi Sundaram is in the fray.

15:54 It has been twenty years in the making but Pakistan have their gold medal in hockey at the Asian Games again. They finished rock bottom in the 2010 World Cup in New Delhi. Now they have put that behind them and won the Asian Games. From the ridiculous to the sublime - something one can associate with Pakistan sports. That also means they don't need to play those qualifiers to advance to the 2012 London Olympics because the Asian Games winners get direct qualification.

15:52 For all the statistics buffs, Tintu finished with a time of 2.01.36. The winner, Margarita, finished with a time of 2.00.29.

15:50 Malaysia try to set up a rousing finale but Salman Akbar denies with some work between the posts. Pakistan are on the brink. Two minutes remain between them and the gold.

15:47 More disappointment for India in the track and field. Suresh took off like a cat chasing its dinner but faded pretty badly in the home stretch and finished below fifth.

15:45 Suresh Sathya is in one of the outside lanes in the men's 200m final. He, if you remember, ran an absolute stomper of a race in the heats.

That women's 200m final was actually very close. Geetha, while she finished fifth, missed out a bronze by 0.04 seconds. Familiar names Chisato Fukushima and Guzel Khubbieva finished first and third with Viernam's Vu Thi getting the silver.

15:35 Back to the men's hockey final where Pakistan are still dominating proceedings at 2-0 but Malaysia cannot be written offy et. Fifteen second-half minutes remaining in that one. Will it meander or will see a fightback?

15:32 Geetha was hanging on for the first 150m but she was just dropped out of the medal reckoning at the death. Good, strong race though from Geetha.

15:30 Geetha Satti will be in lane two in the women's 200m final.

Still two-nil between Pakistan and Malaysia in the men's hockey.

Geetha Satti of India will be in action in the women's 200m final shortly. Meanwhile, Pakistan have doubled their advantage against Malaysia in the men's hockey final. No. 10 Rehan Butt giving Pakistan the much needed two-goal cushion.

15:14 Iran takes the gold in the men's 800m final.

Luka would do well to have a look at this tape. The winner settling just behind the lead runner for a perios of time before exerting his energy in the last 100m. Textbook race that from the Iranian - Sajad Moradi to take the gold.

15:00 Pakistan looking brilliant against Malaysia in the men's hockey final. While the former only leads by a goal to nil, Pakistan look like extending that advantage any minute. That veteran Sohail Abbas with the only goal of the game so far.

14:58 Oh dear. That must be heart-breaking. After leading the race for 700m, Luka seemed to have run out of steam and she dropped the pace. Right on hand, Margarita Matsko of Kazakhstan and Thanh Hang of Vietnam pounce to take the gold and the silver. TIntu finishes in third for a bronze.

14:56 TIntu leads the race while Sinimole brings up the rear. Ironic, right?

14:55 Tintu Luka and Sinimole Paulose are about to start their 800m final. Hold on to your hats.

14:51 In an absolute belter of a game to decide the third place team in men's football, South Korea have stanged an almighty fightback after being two goals to the good down against Iran. Down 2-0, South Korea are leading 4-3.

14:47 South Korea's Lee Yeon-Kyung has won the gold in the women's 100m hurdles.

Mausam has beaten Jaegang to take the bronze medal. No dearth of bronze medals for India.

Mausam Khatri's match against Jaegang Kim of South Korea for the bronze in the men's 96 kg freestyle in wrestling has begun. In fact, Khatri is leading 1-0.

14:40 You know what. The cricket stadium has seen two upsets. As if Afghanistan beating Pakistan was not enough, Bangladesh has made it a double whammy for the established sides by beating Sri Lanka in the other semifinal. Batting first, Sri Lanka managed only 101. In reply Bangladesh knocked those off with relative ease. So it is Bangladesh vs Afghanistan in the gold medal match. Incredible.

14:35 Pakistan have prevented a Malaysian double in the team final in squash. They have beaten the Malaysian men 2-0 to take the gold in the men's team final. Earlier in the day, the Malaysian women beat Hong Kong to take the gold in the women's team event.

Let me just take you through the timings of the important India-centric events remaining for the day.

Tintu Luka will be in action in the women's 800m final around 14:55 IST.

The women's 400m hurdles final is scheduled at about 16:20 IST.

Vikas Krishnan and Dinesh Kumar are scheduled to begin their respective finals at about 17:00 IST and 17:30 IST respectively.

Mausam Khatri will be in action in a bronze medal match in the men's 96 kg freestyle category in wrestling at about 14:40 IST. .

Missed out on all the fun in the early part of the day while Ashwin Achal >was in his elements ?

Just seen a very good Kabaddi match. Want to know what is in store? Does Tintu Luka in the women's 800m final whet your appetite? If not, how about the boxers? Surely one of these two ought to leave you breathless.

Hello and good afternoon to another cracking day of action.
