Asian chess championship: Aravindh, Vaishali in second spot

India’s Aravindh Chithamabaram held overnight leader and sixth seed Wang Ho of host China in the sixth round of the here. The draw helped Aravindh (4.5 points) retain his second position behind the Chinese (5).

Also on 4.5 points was B. Adhiban, seeded seventh. S.P. Sethuraman, Vidit Gujrathi, Sandipan Chanda and Surya Shekhar Ganguly had four points each with three rounds remaining.

In the women’s event, R. Vaishali shocked fifth seed Pham Le Thao Nguyen of Vietnam on the top board and moved into the second position, which she shared with Kazakhstan’s Gulishkan Nakhbayeva.

Vietnam’s Vo Thi Kim Phung was in the sole lead with six points.

Mary Ann Gomes and fourth seed Padmini Rout were among four players on five points while P.V. Nandhidhaa had 4.5 points.
